In April Canterbury Foodbank wrote to all candidates asking them how there manifesto’s would reduce poverty by growing wages in the district. Kent County Council estimate that average earnings in Canterbury are the second lowest in Kent.
Low average earnings in our district are commonly explained by our unusually large student population and reliance on a tourist economy which pays poorly in the hospitality sector. Canterbury Foodbank estimate that were all employers in the whole district to pay the Real Living Wage some 8,000 people would see there earnings increase.
The foodbank were specifically interested how political parties could kickstart a campaign for the Real Living Wage by ensuring Caneco (a council run company who manage our waste collection) could be better paid.
