Year 5 students at Whitstable Junior School have this week been taking part in a series of short democracy workshops designed to introduce them to their local councillors and inspire them to become voters of the future.
The 45 minute sessions, delivered over zoom, were designed by Councillor Chris Cornell and inspired by the ‘Adopt a Councillor‘ Scheme popular in New Zealand.
During the session students watched the enclosed video and asked local councillors questions including:
- ‘What inspired you to get into politics?”
- ‘How do you decide what goes in your manifesto?’
- ‘Why are there 38 of you?”
- and ‘What happens if a vote is tied?’
The students then worked on their ideas to improve Whitstable which will be printed up in a big banner and returned to the school in September. The designs will also be used in a resident leaflet scheduled for the Autumn.
